Japan’s housing and wood products company Sumitomo Forestry has unveiled the concept of the W350 plan to develop a 350m-tall wooden high-rise building in Tokyo.

The structure is slated open in 2041 to mark the 350th anniversary of Sumitomo Forestry.

Its concept was created at the company’s research and development facility, Tsukuba Research Institute. Sumitomo Forestry aims to create environmentally friendly and timber-utilising cities through the increased use of wooden architecture for high-rise buildings.

The hybrid wood and steel structure will be composed of 90% wood materials, embraced with steel frames for earthquake resilience, wooden interiors and balconies with plants around the exterior.

The mixed-use 70-storey building will span over 6,500m², with an approximated construction cost of JPY600bn ($5.6bn) and use 185,000m³ of timber.

Architectural firm Nikken Sekkei was involved in the development of the building’s design.
