Artists Join Fight to Preserve London Design Centre

11 March 2008

Prominent UK artists including Tracy Emin, Dinos Chapman and Gavin Turk have joined a resident's fight against high-rise building in east London's Shoreditch area – a favourite of the UK art scene.

Campaign group Open Shoreditch has used the high-profile signatories to protest to London Mayor Ken Livingstone against recent proposals, including a 51-storey Bishop's Place development that will see historic building – the Light Bar – demolished.

The group is concerned that land between iconic Brick Lane and Shoreditch could end up containing a "dense forest of towers up to 50-storeys high" that will block light and overshadow streets and homes.

The group is calling for a comprehensive master plan to be developed for the area.
