Grass Hill Could Become London Landmark

19 March 2008

London's South Bank could soon be transformed with a radical design for a giant grassy knoll.

The radical project, dubbed The Hill, could be built near Tower Bridge, and is set to house a £175m arts centre including installations, rides and live performances, according to its designers.

Artistic director Simon Elliot says the public "feels disenfranchised with the high-end of arts culture" and told London's Evening Standard newspaper he wants to bring in "the kind of audience who would be happy at a football match."

An outline planning application is being drawn up for the project, which is believed to have the backing of Dame Judi Dench and Emma Thompson.
