Scotland Launches "Eco Pub"

08 April 2008

Scotland's first "eco pub" has been designed with materials made from sustainable sources, expected to dramatically slash running costs.

The Boathouse, due to open in two weeks, was constructed using timber harvested from sustainable sources, including reed beds for treating waste and a geothermal heating system to draw residual heat from a nearby canal.

Energy costs are expected to be cut by a quarter from a building of the same size, with water use minimised through features such as waterless urinals and low-flush toilets.

Energy-efficient lighting and refrigeration will also be installed, with sensors programmed to automatically switch lights off in unoccupied areas.

The pub, managed by Scottish & Newcastle Pub Enterprises, will have an adjoining hotel, with ten bedrooms.
