Architects and designers have entered a bidding war to design a new £15m grandstand for a military event in Scotland.
According to Scottish press reports, organisers of the the millitary tattoo (or military drum performance) are in a race against time to replace the existing spectator arena on the Castle Esplanade within five years.
The current aging structures, which have been used for every Tattoo since 1975, take up to 12 weeks to install every summer and are coming to the end of their life, writes the Scotsman.
According to the publication, an announcement on the funding situation of the new 8,600-seater grandstand is imminent. But, ahead of this announcement, tattoo chiefs have invited tenders for the design, manufacture and erection of the stands.
The Edinburgh Military Tattoo is one of the highlights of the city's festival programme and contributes £100m to the nation's economy, according to the local council.
