Contract awarded for $1.5bn expansion of Jacob K Javits Convention Center in US
Empire State Development has selected a design build team, led by Lendlease (US) Construction LMB and Turner Construction with tvsdesign, to oversee the $1.5bn expansion of the Jacob K Javits Convention Center in New York City.
The expansion will see the addition of 90,000ft² of permanent exhibit space and 45,000ft² of meeting room space to the site, and is expected to result in increased economic activity to the city and wider state area.
An exhibition hall covering roughly 500,000ft² will ultimately be created when the additional exhibit space is combined with existing facilities.
Turner Construction Company executive vice-president Pat Di Filippo said: "The construction, self-perform and technical engineering expertise of our team gives us confidence as we undertake this monumental project.
“We look forward to delivering an extraordinary, world-class facility for the people of New York, and the many visitors who come through the convention centre every year."
The expansion will also involve the addition of a 55,000ft² ballroom, a green roof terrace and pavilion accommodating 1,500 people for outdoor events, an on-site truck marshalling facility with capacity for more than 230 event trucks, and 27 new loading docks.
Empire State Development president and CEO Howard Zemsky said: "The Javits Center is one of New York State's greatest economic assets, and this project will turn this building into a 21st century marvel, a convention centre of the caliber that New York deserves.
"With these new, state-of-the-art facilities, we will be able to attract the world's best conferences and events, and drive economic activity throughout the region for decades to come."
The six-block Javits Center is located on Manhattan's West Side on 11th Avenue between West 34th and West 40th Streets and encompasses 2.1 million square feet, including 840,000ft² of exhibition space.
