Emaar Properties plans to construct a new tower in Dubai surpassing Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest building.

The firm has stated that the tower would be 'a notch' taller than Burj Khalifa, which is 2,717ft tall.

This tower is expected to be built at a cost of $1bn and completed by 2020, in time for the Dubai Expo trade fair.

It will have residential units as well as a rooftop courtyard and a hotel, reported the BBC.

The structure has been designed by Spanish-Swiss architect Santiago Calatrava Valls.

Supported by cables, the skyscraper will also feature an observation deck, gardens, and shops, and be at the centre of the Dubai Creek redevelopment.

Burj Khalifa was built by Emaar Properties and has 160 stories.

Dubai is home to several important projects, including an amusement park with an investment of $3bn.

The city intends to draw around 20 million tourists annually by 2020, which is twice the figure recorded in 2012, reported Digital Trends.
