The city of Holyoke has commenced construction of a $14.5m expansion project for the historic public library in downtown Holyoke, Massachusetts, US.
Architecture firm Finegold Alexander + Associates secured the renovation contract to design a modern 18,000ft2 addition, while restoring the existing 24,000ft2 library to enhance programming and community gathering spaces.
The library will get a new monumental stair and glazed reading rooms to connect the expansion to the building’s original front section.
The project will also expand the library’s children’s room and create a young adult area, while adding space for additional computers and other technology.
In addition, Finegold Alexander plans to reinstall three skylights and restore the library’s original interior, as it appeared in 1902.
