Interserve awarded design and build contract from University of York

24 August 2016

Interserve has secured a contract to design and build a three-storey structure at the University of York’s Campus East.

The £17m contract will be the company’s second to be secured from the University of York and is a part of a £27m build scheme.

Interserve will design the Piazza Learning Centre, which will house teaching facilities and learning spaces with two laboratories, a 350-seat auditorium, a 100-seat lecture theatre, a 300-seat restaurant, staff areas, and offices.

The new building will occupy an area of 6,800m2 and will also be used by the university’s International Pathway College (IPC). IPC's director Matthew Perry said: “This will be a fantastic teaching and learning space for staff and students and is indicative of the scale of ambition at the University of York and our confidence in the IPC’s ability to attract students from all over the world.

"The new Piazza Learning Centre will house teaching facilities and learning spaces."

“We are already looking forward to moving in.”

The company has begun the construction work, which is expected to be completed by next year.

Interserve expects to secure a good rating under the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM). Interserve's divisional director John Gittins said: “We are looking forward to further strengthening our relationship with the University of York as it continues to both expand and renew its facilities.

"At Interserve we are committed to investing in the communities in which we work and we will be continuing to engage with the local supply chain as well as creating new job opportunities for local people.”
