ISG to build supermarket in Clacton-on-Sea using Level 2 BIM

20 June 2016

UK-based retailer Asda has selected ISG to build a new £10m supermarket in Clacton-on-Sea using level 2 building information modelling (BIM).

The site of a former multi-occupancy retail development will be used to construct the 35,000ft² steel frame store. It will house a customer café, deli counter, an in-store bakery, staff areas, an automated petrol station, and a large car park with four electric vehicle charge points.

ISG's western regional managing director Rob Martin said: "The Clacton-on-Sea project represents the culmination of a journey by Asda into advanced collaborative working practices. ISG has played a key role as a trusted project partner and influencer.

"In a sector where operational costs and asset management are critical, BIM not only creates efficiency benefits during the build phase but also throughout the service life of the store. We are thrilled to be working with Asda on such a milestone project."

Acting as information manager for Asda, ISG is collating all digital information and coordinating clash detection with project consultants.

ISG said that full level 2 BIM implementation will generate efficiencies at the time of pre-construction and delivery stages, while modelling will enable design co-ordination and clash detection. 4D programming will connect the 3D models to the build programme to show week-by-week progress visually.

Work will be logged and assigned by ISG's in-house tablet-based snagging system to ensure rigorous standards of quality are maintained at every stage of the development.

The BIM process enables ISG to co-ordinate all asset information to enable a digitised handover, which will integrate with Asda's facilities management systems.
