British automaker Jaguar Land Rover has selected Vinci Construction for the expansion of its Midland based engine manufacturing centre.

The firm intends to invest £450m for the expansion plan, which has been claimed to double the size of the facility.

The expansion programme has been initiated by the company to meet the global demand for its current and future vehicle models.

Designs for the 11m high, L-shaped factory building, which represents the expansion, have been prepared by Associated Architects, reports Construction Enquirer.

"The decision to expand our operations at the site provides a clear signal of our commitment to meeting customer demand."

Severfield is supposed to have won the huge steelwork contract for the 900,000ft² development, which is expected to be set up within 18 months.

Jaguar Land Rover CEO Ralf Speth said: "We are proud to be such a significant investor in advanced manufacturing in Britain and are excited by this expansion and the new jobs it will create.

"The Engine Manufacturing Centre is a strategically significant facility for Jaguar Land Rover.

"The decision to expand our operations at the site provides a clear signal of our commitment to meeting customer demand for cleaner and more efficient engines, whilst developing the skills and capability that Britain needs if it is to remain globally competitive."

The latest developmental phase is likely to increase the site’s operational footprint to 200,000m², the firm said.

Planning permission for the new engine factory under the expansion initiative was secured by the automaker in October.
