The WSP-led team has unveiled the design for a new sports and entertainment arena to be built on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

Yas Island is a leisure, shopping and entertainment destination that includes a hotel cluster, the Yas Marina F1 circuit, and various theme parks.

The multipurpose Yas Arena that can be used all year round will be developed by a team comprising WSP, HOK, and Pascall and Watson.

The team was engaged by Miral Asset Management, the organisation which is responsible for the development of the broad southern part of Yas Island.

HOK noted that the illuminated lantern facade of the Yas Arena facility complements the waterfront promenade at Yas Bay.

HOK Sports, Recreation and Entertainment practice director John Rhodes said: “Our goal is to create an exceptional entertainment experience for fans and spectators.

The arena has been designed to expand its capacity from a 500-seat theatre to an 18,000-seat venue facility, supporting a wide range of events such as community gatherings, concerts, performances, sporting events, meetings, and conventions.

Premium spaces include a VIP lounge that can be changed into a grand ballroom for events and hospitality boxes, while there is also unique terrace bars for receptions and parties.

Rhodes added: “Our team knew the building needed to be smart, adaptable and technologically advanced in order to efficiently transform for the wide variety of events the client wished to host.”

Other amenities, including food and beverage, will be located adjacent to the arena. The outdoor concourse will help provide connectivity to the surrounding district on Yas Bay.
