The Bowie State University in Maryland is planning to install 25,000ft² of electronically tintable SageGlass by Saint-Gobain at its new Center for Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Nursing.

SageGlass is designed to control sunlight and provide those inside with unobstructed views of the outdoors.

The glass will be installed in numerous exterior classroom laboratories, as well as multi-purpose space belonging to the 150,000ft² centre.

Apart from eliminating the need to use blinds or shades throughout the building, the glass will also control the sunlight that enters to optimise daylight, outdoor views and comfort while preventing glare, fading and overheating.

"SageGlass will provide our students with a superior learning environment, and at the same time it will help reduce energy costs for the University."

The glass is capable of tinting automatically through light sensors, thereby allowing the faculty to customise solar control in each classroom.

According to the makers, the glass is capable of blocking sunlight on hot days.

Bowie State University administration and finance vice president Dr. Karl Brockenbrough said: "Building a state-of-the-art learning and research facility for our science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) and nursing programmes required the incorporation of the most innovative building materials available today.

"SageGlass will provide our students with a superior learning environment, and at the same time it will help reduce energy costs for the University.

"Upon completion, the iconic new Center will be a focal point on our campus. It will elevate our STEM and nursing programs and help attract new students to Bowie State University for years to come."

The work at Bowie State University Center for Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Nursing is expected to be completed in spring 2017.
