Salterbeck Estate, in Workington, Cumbria, is awash with colour after residents worked with Akzo Nobel Decorative Coatings Limited to choose the colour palettes used in the extensive external redecoration programme.

The residents of Impact Housing Association, which transferred from local authority ownership six years ago, were invited to choose from six different colour schemes when their homes were earmarked for redecoration. Impact Housing Association approached Akzo Nobel to come up with a range of choices for the residents who then selected their individual options.

The project involved the external repainting of around 200 properties on the Salterbeck Estate, and is just one part of a five-year cyclical redecoration partnership between Impact Housing Association and Akzo Nobel.

The programme involved the repainting of the exterior of the properties using Sandtex Trade FlexiGloss X-tra on all timber doors and frames, as well as fencing, and Sandtex Trade High Cover Smooth on walls and render. Sandtex Trade Classic Stone Gloss and High Cover Smooth masonry were used for door surrounds and window sills. Residents were allowed to express their individual preferences for each part of their home which was to be repainted.

Stephen Wilson, Operations Manager at Impact Housing Association, said: “We have always welcomed resident involvement, because after all it is their home that we are refurbishing. It is always better from our point of view to speak to the tenants concerned and to hear their views on aspects of redecorating, such as colour scheming. They too appreciate the opportunity to be able to choose the colours that they want to see.”
