Evac+Chair International is a UK-based designer and manufacturer of emergency stairway evacuation systems for people of impaired mobility. Established in 1985, the company is the leader in its field, and has a reputation for setting new standards and pioneering new products such as the Evac+Chair stairway evacuation chair.

Stairway descent system for the mobility-impaired

The Evac+Chair, winner of the Industrial Designers of America’s Design of the Decade Award, is a simple, safe and effective method of stairway descent for the mobility-impaired, allowing safe escape for all. It enables one person to transport a mobility-impaired person downstairs and on the flat quickly and safely in an emergency. The Evac+Chair doesn’t hinder other stairway users and requires no great physical strength because operation is smooth and controlled, due to specially modified V-belts which work continuously to slow down descent over stair nosings in proportion to the passenger’s weight.

The strategic placing of Evac+Chairs throughout a building, together with escape drill training, helps employers and building owners to meet their duty of care in risk assessments in almost every building with more than one storey, in compliance with the Disability Discrimination Act and the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. Evac+Chair International offers a complete turnkey solution including: site assessment, training courses and nationwide on-site servicing of the stairway evacuation chairs, giving peace of mind that the 1998 Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations are met.

Where there is a need for the mobility-impaired to ascend as well as descend a flight of stairs in an emergency, Evac+Chair’s Ibex Transeat is ideal. It will ascend a stair with the application of minimal force by two operators.
