Egypt unveils plans to build new $45bn city

The Egyptian Government announced it will invest $45bn in building a new capital to the east of Cairo, to address prevailing economic conditions and ease overpopulation in the next 40 years.

At an investment conference, Egypt Housing Minister Mostafa Madbouly said the project would take five to seven years to complete.

According to developers, the new city will have almost 2,000 schools and colleges and more than 600 healthcare facilities. It will also include an expansive international airport and more than 6,000 miles of new roads.

Mace wins contract for Luanda International Airport in Angola

Construction company Mace was appointed as project manager and site supervisor for the new $3.8bn Luanda International Airport in Angola.

For the newbuild, the Angolan Ministry of Transportation signed a FIDIC design and build turnkey contract with CIF, a contractor in China.

Lend Lease and 1MDB Real Estate sign $2.1bn deal in Malaysia

1MDB Real Estate and international property group Lend Lease signed a MYR8bn ($2.1bn) deal to develop the upcoming international financial district Tun Razak Exchange’s (TRX) Lifestyle Quarter in Kuala Lumpur.

The companies previously signed an initial master framework agreement in October 2014.

Upon completion, Lend Lease will own 60% of the partnership with 1MDB RE holding the remaining 40%.

Retail-led, mixed-use development Lifestyle Quarter at TRX will spread across 17 acres and feature a new shopping mall, residential towers and a hotel connected to a multi-layer central park and MRT station in Kuala Lumpur.

Daniels plans $700m waterfront mixed-use condo project

The Daniels Corporation is planning a new $700m waterfront mixed-use condo project at the former Guvernment Nightclub entertainment complex in Toronto.

The proposed Daniels Waterfront – City of the Arts will be located at East Bayfront, at the corner of Lower Jarvis St and Queens Quay East.

As part of the project, Daniels will develop a 1,320,000ft² ‘live-work-play-learn-create’ community that combines office, retail, residential, academic, and cultural components within two phases at the site.

Foster + Partners designs 80-storey tower in Toronto

Foster + Partners released its designs for an 80-storey, mixed-use tower at One Bloor West in downtown Toronto, Canada.

Rising to 318m, The One will be Toronto’s second-tallest building, combining a residential tower with a retail base integrated with the city’s underground pedestrian network, the PATH.

According to Foster + Partners, the base of tower will consist of nine levels of shops, cafes and restaurants, arranged around a soaring 60m atrium.

Morphosis designs new skyscraper in Vals, Switzerland

Morphosis Architects unveiled designs for a new luxury hotel in Vals, Switzerland.

The design was selected by 7132 Ltd following an international competition launched by the company in June last year, where eight leading architectural practices participated.

Claimed to be ultra-thin, the 381m-tall tower would be one of three buildings situated at 7132 resort.

The Morphosis-designed tower will join Swiss architect Peter Zumthor’s Therme Vals Spa, and Japanese architect Tadao Ando’s Valser Path, which are expected to be complete by 2017.

Vincent Callebaut unveils masterplan for eco-city in Rome’s military district

France-based architect Vincent Callebaut has developed a masterplan for the new Città della Scienza that would transform Rome’s military district into a self-sufficient urban ecosystem.

The plan’s large public spaces and emphasis on urban connectivity are intended to promote social mixing of the different identities and cultural spots in the district.

According to Callebaut, Città della Scienza aims to bring functionality and visual appeal to the area, as well as encourage sustainable design, low carbon transportation, renewable energies, automation technologies and the use of green building materials.

Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University eco-building

Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore unveiled its new eco-friendly building, which is due to open to students in August.

Designed by the UK’s Heatherwick Studio, the new eight-storey building has 12 tapered towers that incorporate natural foliage into the construction, internal vertical greenery and rooftop terraces.

It was designed in an inverted shape enabling the upper floors to shade the lower ones, further reducing exposure to solar heat.

Kinslow, Keith and Todd propose tornado tower in Tulsa, US

US-based Kinslow, Keith and Todd was appointed by Tulsa People Magazine to design a skyscraper called Tornado Tower for the city of Tulsa.

The architecture firm proposed a ‘twister’ shape for a building after Tulsa People Magazine requested proposals to rejuvenate the area, which currently hosts a part-time garage.

The proposed funnel cloud-shaped Tornado Tower is planned to be built near BOK Center, the 19,000-seat home of the Tulsa Oilers. It will house a weather museum and a research centre, The Daily Mail reported.

Egypt to construct a 200m pyramid skyscraper in Cairo

Egypt plans to construct a 200m-high pyramid skyscraper at Sheikh Zayed City in Cairo.

Developed in partnership with Egypt’s New Urban Communities Authority (Nuca), Zayed Crystal Spark will have 49-storeys and sit on a 798,000m² area, offering government, commercial and entertainment space.

Zayed Crystal Spark will become the tallest tower in the country, Daily News Egypt reported. It will also be higher than the 138m Great Pyramid.
