AECOM selected as preferred bidder to masterplan £26bn Old Oak Common regeneration

A consortium led by AECOM and its partners BIG, Bilfinger, GVA, Fluid, Maccreanor Lavington, PBA, Weston Williamson, Spacehub, Wilkinson Eyre and East have reportedly secured the £26bn masterplan bid for the regeneration of Old Oak Common, London, UK.

According to Clad News, the group obtained the contract through a competitive tender process, which also included participation by firms such as Arup, Allies and Morrison, Grimshaw, Hawkins Brown, and Farrells.

London’s Old Oak and Park Royal is considered an opportunity area with upcoming High Speed 2 (HS2) and Crossrail Station construction that is expected to be completed by 2026.

Harvard Centre for Green Buildings and Cities retrofits headquarters to improve sustainability

The Harvard University Graduate School of Design’s (GSD) Harvard Centre for Green Buildings and Cities is retrofitting its headquarters under the HouseZero project to demonstrate improved sustainability.

The facility will be converting its pre-1940s stick-built house into a prototype that will not use HVAC system or electric light during daytime and will have complete ventilation, nearly zero energy and carbon emissions.

HouseZero was created by the Harvard Centre for Green Buildings and Cities founding director Ali Malkawi, who is also an architectural technology professor at the GSD.

Makers Quarter breaks ground on BNIM-designed block D

A new block designed by architecture and design firm BNIM for Makers Quarter in downtown East Village of San Diego, US, has broken ground.

While Makers Quarter is a six-block work, live, play neighbourhood, its new block D is a one million square feet six-storey office hub with retail and restaurant space on the ground floor.

BNIM focused on creating a new office space by pulling service core and amenities to one side, allowing flexible spaces, cross ventilation, daylight and views.

Schmidt Hammer Lassen to design mixed-use development at Carlsberg City district in Copenhagen

Schmidt Hammer Lassen and its partners will design a new mixed-use development on the former site of Carlsberg brewery in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Its partners include Holscher Nordberg Architects, Züblin and COWI.

Spread over an area of 36,000m² at the new Carlsberg City district, the development includes a city block and an 80m-high residential tower.

Balfour concludes piling work at Madison in London, UK

Infrastructure group Balfour Beatty has completed piling work at the £150m residential project ‘Madison’ in Canary Wharf, London.

With 625 12m-25m piles driven into the ground, firm foundations are in place to build the 53-storey 180m-high tower.

Designed by Make Architects and developed by LBS Properties, the project includes 423 specification studios and 104 one, two and three bedroom homes with a variety of amenities such as outside space, a hotel-style lounge, gym and swimming pool.

Seaman invests in new indoor tennis facility at City of Wooster, US

Fabric manufacturer Seaman has invested in the construction of a new indoor tennis facility and an outdoor corporate and recreational area in the City of Wooster, Ohio, US.

Named as Aspen Racquet Club, the tennis facility will include six courts with a capacity to host the United States Tennis Association (USTA) tournaments and is expected to be opened later this year.

The company is also planning to donate around ten acres of surrounding land for the development of the corporate and community recreational park.

Leighton Asia receives $327m East Kowloon Cultural Centre contract

Leighton Asia has received a A$436m ($327m) contract from the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region to build East Kowloon Cultural Centre.

The company is a division of CPB Contractors and is a subsidiary of Australian construction firm CIMIC Group.

Set to begin this month, the works will include construction of a three-storey building, three 120-250-seat studios, a 1,200-capacity auditorium and a 550-seat theatre.

Obama Foundation releases design concept of Obama Presidential Center in Chicago, US

The Obama Foundation has unveiled the conceptual vision and site map for the Obama Presidential Center.

The centre, located on the south side of Chicago, will include a museum, classrooms, labs and outdoor spaces, and will be integrated into the historic Jackson Park.

The design concept includes three buildings, each of which is dedicated to a museum, forum and a library.
