Caledonian wins £13m ACS Cobham International School contract

Construction company Caledonian Modular has secured a contract worth £13m to build new student accommodation for a global group of four private schools.

As principal design and build contractor, Caledonian will be responsible for end-to-end delivery of the new building, which is planned to be completed by June next year.

Global architecture, urbanism and design provider Broadway Malyan designed the upcoming facility, which is expected to complement the school’s existing boarding house.

It will provide an additional 113 bed spaces, which will all be constructed in premium single and double room format.

Steven Holl Architects to design new building for Franklin & Marshall College in US

Steven Holl Architects has been selected to design a new visual arts building at Franklin & Marshall College in Pennsylvania, US.

To be funded by trustee Benjamin Winter, the design will feature a glass-enclosed forum in the centre of the ground floor, which will allow pedestrians on the campus-side of the building to view Buchanan Park.

The building will form part of a new Visual Arts Quad and have a storm water reflecting pool.

Steven Holl Architects said: "We always try to shape a unique experience and our approach is the same with this project.

"We look to create something of this place, to inspire future students."

Design revealed for regeneration of a brownfield urban site in Prague

Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) has unveiled a design for a new central business district adjacent to Masaryk railway station.

The firm has collaborated with the city and local partners to regenerate a brownfield urban site, which has been derelict for several decades.

The plan integrates the city’s transport networks including suburban and domestic rail services, as well as coach and bus terminals.

According to the plan, Masaryk station will also become the future city terminus for a new airport rail link to Vaclav Havel International Airport.

The mixed-use development combines Prague’s districts 1, 3 and 8, minimising the impact of the elevated Wilsonova Highway separating them.

Connecticut’s Yale Center for British Art reopens after 16-month renovation

After being closed for 16 months, New Haven’s Yale Center for British Art was reopened to the public last week.

The renovation project was led by Knight Architecture principal George Knight in collaboration with the centre’s deputy director Constance Clement, Conservation Architects’ Peter Inskip, and Peter Jenkins Architects.

Work was completed in three phases spanning eight years. The first phase took place from 2008-11, when the exterior lobby court was restored. From 2011-13, second phase repairs were carried out at the lecture hall lobby.

In 2015 and 2016, the third phase began at a cost of $33m.

Laing O’Rourke wins £76m contract to construct residential tower at Imperial College London

Laing O’Rourke has secured an contract worth £76m to construct a 34-storey residential tower at the White City Campus of Imperial College London.

Work will begin this month and is expected to completed in 2019.

Spanning 20,000m², it will feature 192 apartments, comprising 59 flats for key workers of the college at below market rents.

This is the firm’s third project on the White City Campus, reported Constructionindex.co.uk.

Salford Council in UK approves construction of 44-storey residential tower

Salford Council has approved the construction of a 44-storey tower to be built at Exchange Court in the Greengate area near Greater Manchester, UK.

Said to be the new landmark structure in this region, the new structure will be developed by AQ Investments.

It will feature 349 apartments with a lounge, roof garden, gymnasium, 24/7 concierge and basement parking for residents.

OMI Architects have designed the Exchange Court, which is scheduled for construction this June and expected to complete by 2018.

Unite Students plans £40m student accommodation in Birmingham

Developer and managing company for accommodation Unite Students has secured a project to develop a site in central Birmingham.

The new site will provide accommodation for about 600 students with a total project cost estimated at £40m, which includes land and development costs.

It is expected to be completed by 2019 and will be funded through internal sources.

The construction site is located close to Aston University and Birmingham City University adjacent to the operational Unite building.

Ireland’s DCU unveils infrastructural development proposal

Dublin City University (DCU) has revealed a €230m plan for construction of a student centre, sports facilities, modern digital teaching spaces, and an extension to on-campus accommodation.

A long-term loan has been secured for the project, as well as bridging finance for infrastructural improvements to be carried out in next five years.

The plan is financially backed by Ireland Strategic Investment Fund, which is managed by National Treasury Management Agency (NTMA).

It initially committed to provide €54m for student accommodation projects, but is now funding in parallel with the European Investment Bank (EIB).
