The global construction industry noticed a 1.9% drop in IT hiring activity in September 2021 over the previous month, led by Black & Veatch’s 10.05% share, according to GlobalData’s Jobs Analytics database.

The construction industry’s overall hiring activity increased 2.59% when compared with August 2021.

Noticeably, IT jobs accounted for a 3.43% share of the global construction industry’s hiring activity in September 2021, down 0.08% over the last three-month average share.

According to GlobalData, IT job opportunities available at the end of September 2021 were 2.29% lower when compared with the previous month.

The decrease was a result of 4.86% higher job postings as compared to job closures during the month.

Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers drive construction IT hiring activity

Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers with a share of 51.51% emerged as the top IT occupation in the construction hiring activity in September 2021, a 7.41% decline over the previous month. Database and Network Administrators and Architects came in second with a share of 16.86% in September 2021, down 20.83% over the previous month.

The other prominent IT roles include Miscellaneous Computer Occupations with a 15.25% share in September 2021, a decline of 5.13% over the previous month, and Computer and Information Analysts with a 9.41% share in September 2021 and a rise of 22.73% over August 2021.

Top five construction companies by recruitment activity in September 2021

The top five companies, in terms of number of jobs as tracked by GlobalData, accounted for a combined average growth of 10.38% share in the overall IT recruitment activity of global construction industry during September 2021 over August 2021.

Black & Veatch posted 317 IT jobs in September 2021 and registered a flat growth over the previous month, followed by China Merchants Property Operation & Service with 192 jobs and a 31.18% decline. CBRE Group with 128 IT jobs and The GPT Group with 118 jobs, recorded a 4.07% growth and an 118.52% rise, respectively, while Owens Corning recorded a 588.24% rise with 117 job postings during September 2021.

Regional composition of IT hiring in construction industry

North America emerged as the leading region in the global construction IT hiring activity in September 2021 with a 55.37% share, which marked a 2.94% drop over the previous month.

Asia-Pacific stood next with 25.2%, registering a 10.07% month-on-month decline. Europe was the third leading region with an 18.26% share and an 18.41% drop over August 2021.

In the fourth place was Middle East & Africa with a share of 0.89% and a month-on-month rise of 3.7%. South & Central America stood at the bottom of the table with a share of 0.22%, registering a flat growth over the previous month.
