Construction engineering company BESIX Watpac has secured a contract from Christchurch City Council to build the new $683m Te Kaha/Canterbury multi-use arena in New Zealand.

The project will be marked as the company’s first project in the country and the largest currently under construction in the Australia/New Zealand market.

The stadium will have 30,000 seats, including 25,000 permanent and 5,000 temporary seats, with a capacity to host major sporting matches and international entertainment acts.

It will have a scalable seating capacity to remain fit for smaller concerts, shows, and events.

Te Kaha will feature a rectangular permanent stitched hybrid in-situ turf Field of Play, along with a fully covered roof, with a clear span over the complete Field of Play and Bowl area.

The multi-use arena will also have four player changing rooms and food and beverage amenities for 25,000 patrons.

BESIX Watpac Queensland, Northern Territory and New Zealand general manager Barry Whewell said: “The stadium will also be built to withstand Christchurch’s seismic activity not only on completion but during construction, which by any standard is a challenging and unique task.”

To deliver the stadium, the company has been appointed as the lead contractor in the Kōtui consortium that includes global stadium design experts Populous and Mott MacDonald, and architects Warren and Mahoney.

The company is also working with local construction firm Southbase to deliver the project.

It plans to use local trades and suppliers where possible to manage the cost of the construction schedule of the project.

BESIX Watpac previously delivered the $318m Queensland Country Bank Stadium, Suncorp Stadium, Metricon, and the CBUS Stadiums.
