Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust has awarded a contract to Kier to deliver a mental health facility in Islington, London, UK.

In the Trust’s St Pancras Transformation programme, the £17m project to come up at 1 Lowther Road is the first integrated community facility.

As part of the contract, Kier will be responsible for the demolition of the current facility on site and the development of a new four-storey building which will have different facilities.

The newly developed space will offer counselling, interview and treatment rooms.

There will also be a workspace for staff along with a café and collaboration zones for groups.

Additionally, for visitors and the well-being of staff, the new space will feature a ‘pocket’ park.

The focus of this scheme is environmental efficiency, and the project is set to achieve BREEAM excellent standards.

The main aspects include curtain walling with bolt-on solar shading for preventing heat gain and lessening the mechanical ventilation systems demand.

The roof of the facility will have 70m² of solar panels to back renewable energy being used when the building becomes operational.

This project is situated in the centre of Islington and needs discussion and teamwork with Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust, Islington Council and neighbours.

Kier Construction London, South & Strategic Projects managing director David McKenzie said: “We’re proud to be working with Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust to deliver this vitally important mental health facility that will provide state-of-the-art facilities for patients and staff.

“We’ll utilise our extensive experience of delivering healthcare schemes in London to deliver this new building. We understand the importance of community collaboration, local residents will be kept up-to-date with the progress we are making, and a range of job and training opportunities will be offered on this project.”

In July, Barings and LBS Properties selected Kier for the design and construction of their $81.8m (£69m) commercial development at 135 Park Street in London.
