The City of Colorado Springs and Colorado College (CC) have revealed a proposal to build the Edward J. Robson Arena, an on-campus competition venue featuring 3,000 permanent seats.

Based in the US, this arena will become the home of CC Tiger Hockey and serve as a multipurpose venue to host regional, national and international events.

Initially proposed to be a practice venue, the Edward J. Robson Arena has now been envisaged as a competition venue that will benefit the college and the city.

With the new facility, the college’s hockey team will not need to leave the campus for practice and competition, thereby giving them more time to focus on academics. In addition, the entire on-campus community will be able to gather in a single indoor location for the first time.

“This is a game-changer for both Colorado College and downtown Colorado Springs.”

CC president Jill Tiefenthaler stated that the city’s investment through City for Champions and support from various donors have enabled the college to plan for a multipurpose competition venue.

Tiefenthaler said: “Thanks to this partnership and the generosity of donors including alumnus Ed Robson ’54, the George Lyon family, Penrose-St. Francis Health Services and others, the college is moving forward with this ambitious project.

“We’re grateful to the City of Colorado Springs for partnering with us and supporting this hockey arena, which will greatly benefit both the college and downtown.”

Once the college received the approval for the City for Champions initiative, CC will receive more than $28m in commitments for the construction of the $39m arena.

Colorado College athletics director Ken Ralph said: “We are thrilled to partner with the city on this important project.  This is a game-changer for both Colorado College and downtown Colorado Springs.

“This is one of those rare circumstances where it is a win for all involved.”

Until the new facility is completed, Tiger hockey will continue to be played at the Broadmoor World Arena.
