Barking and Dagenham Council’s planning committee has approved plans for a new Hollywood-style film studio in East London, UK.

The £110m project is being planned on a 22-acre former pharmaceutical factory site at London East Business and Technical Park on Yewtree Avenue.

The studio will consist of six 140,000ft² sound stages. Two existing buildings will be converted into workshops for set construction and associated industry users.

The plans also include a landmark office building for pre and post production, alongside space for associated creative industry businesses.

The project is expected to generate around 1,200 new jobs in the studios and associated supply chain.

Commenting on the development, Barking and Dagenham Council leader Darren Rodwell said: “This is a huge decision for the borough. It gives the green light to what will be London’s largest film studio, so it’s a major milestone in the renewal of a part of London badly hit by de-industrialisation and austerity.”

Be First, the council’s pioneering regeneration company, is currently searching for a venture partner. It is also considering a land sale or building the studios to lease to an interested party.

Be First managing director Pat Hayes said: “We’ve had a great deal of interest in the site and with planning permission secured the interest will intensify.  With the ever growing demand for studio space in the UK, we’re in a very good position to take this project forward.”

Construction work for the studio is expected to begin next year if the plan receives approval from the Mayor of London.
