FC Cincinnati in Ohio is to reveal the final design for the Major League Soccer (MLS) West End stadium this week.

The team said that club CEO Carl Lindner III, club president Jeff Berding and lead architect on the project Jonathan Mai will reveal the design.

The new stadium will be the home of FC Cincinnati team that is temporarily playing at Nippert Stadium.

To be located at the former site of Stargel Stadium on Central Parkway at Wade Street in the West End neighbourhood, the stadium is expected to cost $200m and will accommodate around 26,500 spectators.

A previous design released in April showed a ‘grand staircase’ similar to the Spanish Steps in Rome and the steps leading into the New York City Public Library.

The stadium is expected to be enclosed in ribbons of a plastic material, which will emit an orange glow. The design also included a two-storey team store with glass-walls, as well as space outside for a children’s area.

Announced in March, the new design restored a curtailed version the orange lighting on the roof and exterior, in addition to expanding the canopy to cover the entire seating area.

Despite FC Cincinnati president and general manager Jeff Berding mentioning a beer hall as a means to integrate the stadium into the neighbourhood, this has not been included in any previously released designs.

In March, new architect Populus was appointed to replace the previously selected New York and Los Angeles based Meis.

Populus has previously worked on football stadiums throughout the world.

At that time, Berding said: “FCC’s vision for the West End stadium is unique. The West End Stadium will stand out among not only soccer-specific stadiums, but also sports stadiums, in North America.”

A groundbreaking ceremony was held in December last year. The stadium is expected to open in 2021.
