British construction company Galliford Try Building has won a £40m contract to construct Durham University’s new Centre for Teaching and Learning in the UK.
The new 8,000m2 educational centre will be located at Lower Mountjoy site on the university’s city centre campus.
The facility will be equipped with modern technologies throughout the new lecture theatres, teaching rooms, classrooms and education laboratories.
In addition, the centre will be used to host major academic conferences outside of term-time. This will support the economic impact the university makes to Durham City and the county, as well as north-east England.
A ceremony was held last week for the new building, which is expected to be operational in autumn 2019.
Durham University pro-vice-chancellor for education professor Alan Houston said: “The Centre for Teaching and Learning is a key part of our university strategy 2017-27 to ensure Durham is world-leading in research, education and the wider student experience.
