The Falls Church City School Board has selected Gilbane, Stantec, and Quinn Evans Architects (QEA) to design and build the new $108m George Mason High School in Falls Church, Virginia, US.

The design-build team selection comes following the approval of a referendum by the Falls Church community to construct the new high school last November.

Falls Church City Schools superintendent Peter Noonan said: “The design put forth by the Gilbane team is nothing short of brilliant. It is everything the community has asked for and more.

“I’m very excited as we now move into the home stretch with engagement between the architects and the community beginning in earnest.”

“Our team is proud to support the community’s vision for the future of this campus and the dynamic mixed-use development to come.”

According to Stantec, the construction of the new building would be the final milestone in the process.

The proposed exterior design of the new school will combine modern materials with traditional brick.

Interiors are designed with flexible floor plans that provide security, efficiency and adaptability to support programmes and educational needs.

The new building will offer students and teachers a variety of spaces with flexibility, visual transparency and natural lighting.

Stantec senior principal Derk Jeffrey said: “The design pushes the boundaries of current 21st-century academic design thinking to create spaces that are highly adaptable and differentiated to support changes in instructional programs and approaches over time.

“Our team is proud to support the community’s vision for the future of this campus and the dynamic mixed-use development to come.”
