Howard University Selects KGD and Moody Nolan to design new building

The Centre for Fine Arts and Communications’ new home will be established on the northern end of the upper quadrangle.

Howard University in the US has appointed KGD and Moody Nolan to design the future home of the Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts.

The future Center for Fine Arts and Communications, an academic facility, will also house Howard University’s television and radio stations WHUR/WHUT, and the Cathy Hughes School of Communications.

Howard University president Wayne Frederick said: “For the first time since 1984, Howard is constructing new academic buildings. These projects represent the University’s evolving and innovative academic offerings.

“The approach to housing more than one discipline under one roof is to encourage greater breadth and depth of exposures, and to create inroads to strengthen the intersections between various fields of study.”

The future facility will come up on the upper quadrangle’s northern end, behind Childers Hall.

This location will allow better event synchronisation and other major event venues will be clustered on the campus’ northern end.

The project’s first phase is anticipated to be finished by July 2025, with opening expected in 2025.

Moody Nolan is the country’s largest African-American-owned architecture firm.

Moody Nolan partner and the CAC project’s design executive Renauld Deandre Mitchell said: “For the KGD-Moody Nolan team, this represents a transcendent design opportunity.

“The Center for Fine Arts and Communications will endure as a threshold building for the campus and catalyse a new era of innovation and creative expression for future Bison.”

The design by KGD and Moody Nolan for the project is expected to improve academic excellence and serve the Howard community.
