Jestico + Whiles and Conygar reveal development plan in Nottingham, UK

Architect Jestico + Whiles and developer Conygar have revealed plans of the first phase of the £650m Island Quarter mixed-use development in Nottingham, UK.

The location was previously called Boots Island and is expected to become a new landmark offering new homes, office space, a five-star hotel, retail and student accommodation.

Development work on the first phase is expected to commence this year with a three-storey 2,000m² canal-side pavilion called Canal Turn, which will feature two restaurants, a 500m² events space, and a rooftop terrace.

The canal-side pavilion’s design is intended to celebrate the site’s industrial heritage and will also serve as a key symbol of the site’s regeneration.

It will feature large arches set into a masonry base, with a lightweight form of oxidised and patinated steel above.

The design’s focal point is a masonry entrance tower, with its crown serving as a lantern that welcomes visitors.

Jestico + Whiles director James Dilley said: “Our mission with the pavilion in The Island Quarter was to create an iconic landmark, which sits as a magnet at the heart of this extraordinary, resurgent site drawing people through all seasons for a day to evening entertainment and events experience.”

Conygar Nottingham director Richard Watson said: “Conygar has been working closely with Jestico + Whiles and design teams to develop these plans, not only for the first phase but also for the wider site as well.

“The site will create a worldwide destination for Nottingham, which will provide all-year-round interest and community facilities, which can be used from dawn until dusk.”

Conygar intends to construct two million squared feet of  residential, offices and student accommodation space, as well as several leisure areas.

It will feature more than 900 homes, almost 700 student flats, and more than 630,000ft² of office space.

The development value of this project is estimated to be more than £300m.

Last year, the HM Revenues and Customs (HMRC) hired Mace Interiors to deliver 275,000ft² of category B fit-out at its new site in Unity Square, Nottingham.
