Kier transforms Treorchy Comprehensive School in Wales

Kier has refurbished and redeveloped Treorchy Comprehensive School as part of Wales’ 21st Century Schools programme and handed over to Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council.

The transformation programme now offers Treorchy’s nearly 1,800 secondary schoolchildren new learning facilities.

Kier has carried out a transformation programme on the school during the last four years, as part of which a new three-storey science block was constructed.

The building features a lecture theatre, science labs, general classrooms and wider amenities.

In addition, the school’s main reception, sixth form centre and existing teaching blocks have all been renovated.

Kier Regional Building Western & Wales operations director Jason Taylor said: “Working collaboratively with Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council and members of Treorchy Comprehensive School, we are delighted to have transformed this school to provide first-class educational facilities.

“Designed to be a space for pupils to thrive, the school looks unrecognisable and its testament to all of the team involved who have shown such skill and dedication throughout this project.”

Over the duration of the project, Kier regularly updated teachers and schoolchildren with regard to the transformation works.

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council Cabinet Member for Education and Inclusion Services Councillor Joy Rosser said: “The school’s new science block, sixth form areas and other improvements were gratefully received two years ago, as part of the Council’s joint 21st Century Schools investment with the Welsh Government.”

As part of the programme, Kier rebuilt an existing teaching block to deliver a stimulating learning environment.

In February, Kier was selected by Kirklees Council in West Yorkshire, UK to deliver a £15m leisure centre in Liversedge.
