The Board of Trustees of Marshall Independent School District (ISD) has approved a plan by Hellas Construction to replace the turf at Maverick Stadium in Texas, the US.

Hellas placed the proposal after the current turf, installed in 2015, was found to be defective.

As agreed, Hellas will install the new turf at no additional cost to the district.

However, MISD will pay around $300,000 for a new pad and new Ecotherm technology to be deployed underneath the turf. The Ecotherm system will keep the turf around 30° cooler than the current air temperature.

The overall cost of the project is estimated at $1.3m.

Once complete, Maverick Stadium will feature a similar grass surface to the one at the Dallas Cowboys’ AT&T Stadium, where Hellas installed the same turf technology.

The new turf, expected to be ready before the next season, will carry an eight-year warranty.

According to MISD, officials identified defects in the current turf in 2015. Subsequently, the school district office entered discussions with Hellas, following which the latter agreed to replace the surface for free.

Hellas Construction has also installed similar grass surfaces at Baylor’s McLane Stadium and the Houston Texans’ NRG Stadium.

Maverick Stadium is nearly 40 years old. Last year, a new track was installed around the playing surface.

The stadium also features a new press box, while plans are currently underway to rehabilitate the restrooms later this year.
