McLaren Construction has been appointed for the next phase of construction works at ExCeL London’s major expansion project.

Under the contract, the company will work along with key project partners, including Hoare Lea Gardiner & Theobald, Campbell Reith, and Grimshaw Architects.

ExCeL is located in the Royal Docks and has already completed the first phase of its expansion project, which will expand the current facilitates by a further 25% to a 100,000m² (1,076,000ft²) capacity.

The project will create additional advanced ICC convention facilities, conference rooms, and exhibition halls, along with outdoor spaces.

A 12,000m² exhibition space is planned to be added to the new event space on the ground floor.

Additionally, modern meeting rooms, convention space, and catering facilities will be added on the upper level.

ExCeL CEO Jeremy Rees said: “Having completed the first phase of our expansion project on time, we are looking forward to heading into the main construction phase with an experienced and sector-leading project team.

“Led by customer demand, the expansion of our existing award-winning venue campus will ensure we can continue to put London at the forefront of the global events industry.”

Additionally, ExCeL will target a Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) rating of ‘Excellent’.

The expansion project will create permanent and temporary employment during the construction phase.

ExCeL stated that a substantial investment would also be made in the public realm as part of the project.

This will include improved landscaping for pedestrians and cyclists, new greenery along the dock edge, and a new pocket park.
