Medical College of Wisconsin breaks ground on building for cancer research

The research building is intended to lessen the cancer burden in eastern Wisconsin and beyond.

The Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) in the US has broken ground on a new 150,000ft² cancer research building, for which CannonDesign will serve as the architect.

The research building, which is intended to lessen the cancer burden in eastern Wisconsin and beyond, will be constructed by Mortenson.

Upon its completion, the MCW Cancer Research Building will become the only facility for cancer in Milwaukee and eastern Wisconsin.

The new building will create space to allow more synergistic cancer research projects to occur with community partners, as well as participants who focus on enhancing patient health outcomes.

The research facility will also consolidate the MCW cancer research programmes, which currently have approximately 700 researchers in 135 labs across the campus.

The building construction will involve an investment of approximately $100m, with completion expected by late 2024.

In August, MCW got a $10m approval from the State Building Commission for the new research building.

MCW president and CEO  John Raymond said: “The MCW Cancer Research Building will serve as a hub for cancer innovation and bring together the brightest minds to forge innovations that will address the cancer burden impacting patients and families in eastern Wisconsin and beyond.”

MCW leaders, its supporters from the community, and government legislatures participated in the ground-breaking event of the building.

MCW Cancer Center director Gustavo Leone said: “The new cancer research building at MCW will be the place where diverse ideas and people intersect with state-of-the-art instrumentation and technology, to solve the greatest challenges in cancer and bring palpable solutions to patients and our community.”
