MP Boston has commenced construction of its $1.35bn Winthrop Center development in Boston, US.

Designed by Handel Architects, in collaboration with Passive House experts Steven Winter Associates, the 691ft-tall Winthrop Center will house office workspaces, residential units and retail, dining and commercial spaces, as well as a curated public gathering area.

The project is expected to be completed in 2022 and will be the fourth tallest building in Boston.

MP Boston founding partner Christopher Jeffries said: “Winthrop Center represents the next-generation of development offering a seamless integration between the built environment and the urban human experience.

“This building signifies a transformed Boston and is an unprecedented example of how city leaders, the public and forward-thinking private innovators can come together to create the cities of tomorrow.”

“Winthrop Center represents the next-generation of development offering a seamless integration between the built environment and the urban human experience.”

Located in the centre of downtown Boston, the facility has been designed to be a next-generation building that incorporates various aspects such as urban research, architecture, design, technology, sustainability and engineering, which will be evaluated against productivity, wellness and social engagement.

Winthrop Center features 750,000ft² of office space and is designed to achieve LEED Platinum certification. It is being developed in partnership with MIT’s Metabolic Design Office, a collective founded by architecture professor John Fernandez.

In addition, the builders intend to seek certification for the development as a Passive House pilot project.

Other infrastructure being created as part of the project include the development of an open midblock ‘street’ between Winthrop Square/Downtown Crossing and Federal Street/the Financial District.

The building will have a public gathering space, known as the Great Hall, at the base.

Meanwhile, Winthrop Center will include 420 units of luxury residences, with the owner of each unit having access to all building amenities.

Winthrop Center will also accommodate a residential Club that will feature a full-service lounge and function room, exclusively for residents.
