The Narendra Modi Stadium has opened in the Indian state of Gujarat and is the current largest cricket stadium in the world.

Indian President Ram Nath Kovind inaugurated the stadium, which is named after the Indian Prime Minister, in Sabarmati, Ahmedabad, ahead of the start of the Day-Night Test between India and England.

The refurbished Sardar Patel Stadium in Motera has been rechristened to Narendra Modi Stadium.

Constructed by Larsen & Turbo (L&T) company, the stadium involved an investment of Rs8bn ($110m). It is spread over 63 acres and has a seating capacity of 110,000 people.

A total of 11 clay pitches of six red and five black soils have been prepared in the stadium, which is the first to use coloured clay for main, as well as practice, pitches.

LED floodlights will illuminate the pitch for spectators and cricketers.

Furthermore, Narendra Modi Stadium features a 360° podium concourse at a height of 9m, which provides uniform views to spectators from any stand.

Other features include a 150t air-cooling tower, separate gyms, a special lounge near the players, and a VIP entrance.

In January 2018, the Gujarat Cricket Association laid the foundation stone of the new cricket stadium.

Before the new stadium’s inauguration, Melbourne in Australia had the world’s largest cricket stadium, with a capacity to accommodate 90,000 people.
