Native Land has secured approval from Southwark Council for phase two of its £1bn Bankside Yards mixed-use development, located adjacent to the River Thames in the London Borough of Southwark.

The 1.4 million-square-foot mixed-use development will reconnect the space between the Tate Modern and major London transport hub Blackfriars Station.

PLP Architecture provided the masterplan for the entire scheme. The second phase, named Eastern Yards, will be constructed on the former site of Sampson House.

The second phase will feature five towers housing 341 residential units, with 37 affordable homes, a luxury hotel and office and cultural amenities, along with a series of public spaces. The developer initially secured consent to construct 232 homes in this phase.

Native Land chief-executive Alasdair Nicholls said: “This new planning consent will create a true mixed-use development which brings London together, with new east-west pedestrian routes, multiple transport links, a new village high street in the arches and new town square for Bankside, overlooking the river.”

Construction is underway on the scheme’s first phase, Western Yards, with completion set for 2023.

The project’s masterplan features nine buildings across the current Sampson & Ludgate sites, ranging from seven to 50-storey towers.

It will feature more than 500 new homes alongside office, cultural, leisure and retail spaces, all housed around a landscaped public realm, with new pedestrian connections to the River Thames.

Native Land has appointed MSMR Architects as the interior architect for the tallest of the nine towers. The residential building at the centre of the cluster features 240 apartments and associated residents’ amenity spaces.
