New Zealand’s Yarrow Stadium to undergo $50m repair and upgrade

The Taranaki Regional Council of New Zealand has approved a $50m budget to repair and upgrade Yarrow Stadium.

The Taranaki Regional Council of New Zealand has approved a $50m budget to repair and upgrade Yarrow Stadium.

The outer-field updates are currently pending further discussions with the wider sporting community.

The stadium has been in limited use after its two main stands were considered earthquake-prone in 2017 and 2018.

The budget increased to $55m during initial proposals, but the repair and refurbishment programme has been revised to reduce the impact on ratepayers.

Eight options ranging from $6m to $271m, including a closed roof stadium, were originally put forward for the repair works. The majority of these submissions, however, supported a $55m plan for the repairs.

The council agreed to a revised $50m plan, which includes re-levelling of main field and repairs to the stand.

Taranaki Regional Council chair David MacLeod said that real concern over the cost of the project was evident in many of the submissions from the community read and heard by councillors.

MacLeod said: “Trimming the budget by $5 million is a direct response to these concerns. But we acknowledge some may still be disappointed, either because they think it should be further reduced, or because they wanted to go ahead with everything in the original budget or even spend more. ”

In addition to repairs to the grandstand and consequential changes, The $50m budget also includes updates for additional food and beverage outlets and toilets, LED pitch lighting, car park improvements, technology upgrades and gate improvements. The budget also allocates $1.6m for contingencies.
