Adjaye Associates selected to design Latvian Museum of Contemporary Art

A new hotel development in Vladivostok, Russia, has been allocated R7.5bn ($253m) by the Primorsky Territory state government. The new development is part of the sub-programme for development of Vladivostok in which three, four and five-star hotels will be built between 2008 and 201

London-based Adjaye Associates has teamed-up with Latvia’s AB3D to design the Latvian Museum of Contemporary Art.

The €30m museum is set to open in November 2021.

It will be located in the New Hanza City.

Their design was selected as the winner of the design competition.

Six design studios participated in the competition, which comprised Caruso St John, Lahdelma & Mahlamäki, Henning Larsen Architects, Sauerbruch Hutton, wHY and Neutelings Riedijk.

"This museum meaningfully links the country to the international art community."

The panel included Italian architect Gianni Botsford, OMA partner Reinier de Graaf, Latvian architect Uldis Balodis.

The design proposes constructing a building that will feature an angular roofscape and draws inspiration from the architecture of Baltic conventional wooden houses.

To provide a performance area for special events, a sloped plaza will be built, while a major concourse with a concrete structure will boost acoustics, reported

The primary staircase will have a concrete base, as well as a timber guardrail that will lead to galleries.

Adjaye Associates principal architect David Adjaye was quoted by the website as saying: "This museum will be a beacon that both celebrates Latvia’s incredible artistic legacy and meaningfully links the country to the international art community."

The museum will display contemporary art from the Baltic Sea region.
