BAM Construction is starting the re-development works for the Tate St Ives art gallery in Cornwall, UK.

The project work involves extensive, two-phase re-modeling of the existing building’s learning and roof terrace areas.

The construction firm will create a new 1,200m² extension west of the gallery, below the Barnoon car parking space.

New gallery will make room for temporary exhibitions at the centre and facilitate improved art-handling and additional visitor facilities.

BAM will connect the new construction with the existing one to enable unrestricted visitor movement. It will feature exposed concrete finishes and granite cladding on the outside to match the surrounding local buildings.

Construction enabling works were initiated in October 2014.

BAM had been discussing detailed design for the main project works, which will start from this month.

The project is expected to last for two years and reach its conclusion early in 2017.

BAM construction director Graham Kingdon said: "Not only does it require the highest standards and finishes to protect and enhance the display of priceless artworks, but it is also logistically very challenging because of the access constraints.

"We’ll be working with BAM’s specialist services engineering company, which now covers the west of England and Wales, and the existing gallery of the Tate Gallery will be open for much of the build, closing only for structural works during the winter."
