Hensel Phelps and Mithun have been selected for second phase construction of the University of California's East Campus student housing programme.
The two companies will collaborate to design new housing as a part of the $142m UC San Diego Nuevo West project in the centre of East Mesa.
The housing will also accommodate 80 rooms and community programme space for use by patients undergoing treatment at the adjacent UCSD medical center.
Mithun's partner Brendan Connolly said: "Nuevo West plays a crucial role as a gateway from the main campus to the East Campus. Currently, a canyon separates East Campus from West Campus.
“A planned pedestrian and bicycle bridge will terminate in a central 'town square' space creating a powerful arrival experience that welcomes residents and visitors to this new cohesive campus community."
The housing will also feature amenities such as 1,350 parking stalls, a market, a café with social amenities, and outdoor spaces.
Complying with Leadership in Energy and Envrionmental Design (LEED) Gold certification, designs for the project will use passive solar and thermal stack effect principles to achieve high-performance building energy and comfort goals.
In addition, the design also includes a cast-in-place concrete structural frame to create thermal mass for passive cooling and facades will be created to allow natural cooling by ventilation from westerly prevailing winds.
Native and drought-resistant plantings will occupy three outdoor rooms, which will be irrigated with reclaimed water.
The new student housing at Nuevo West is expected to be opened in 2019.
