UK-based developer Essential Living has appointed McLaren Construction as the lead design and build contractor for its Farrier House scheme in Bethnal Green, east London.

Scope of work under the project includes conversion of two former warehouses into six and eight-storey residential buildings with 149 flats.

The homes developed under the £35m scheme will be available for rent, with 104 for long-term rent and 45 affordable.

McLaren will also be responsible for developing other facilities for on-site residents of the build-to-rent scheme, which will include a concierge, clubroom, rooftop communal terraces and library.

"We believe there is potential to redefine the experience renters receive in the capital."

Based at the corner of Cambridge Heath Road and Three Colts Lane, the site was purchased by Essential Living at £14m from Albany Homes in May 2013.

Farrier House scheme is one of the first of Essential Living's planned eight schemes across the UK capital and South East England, where the firm intends to build 5,000 homes for rent over the next ten years.

Essential Living construction director Ray Theakston said: "The crucial consideration we make as an investor, developer and manager of homes for rent is what the buildings will look like in five, ten and 15 years' time.

The quality of the build is business critical as our number one priority will be to maximise customer satisfaction and ensure residents stay in our homes for as long as possible."

McLaren Construction regional managing director for London David Miller said: "Essential Living's unique approach to design is challenging norms and offering a new option to Britain's nine million renters.

"Farrier House promises to offer an innovative new type of rental product for Bethnal Green and we believe there is potential to redefine the experience renters receive in the capital."

Consultation for the project is expected to start later this year, followed by a planning application to be submitted next summer.
