Orlando City SC and the City of Orlando have selected Populous and Barton Malow for the new Major League Soccer (MLS) stadium in the US.

Populous will be the lead architect while Barton Malow will serve as the construction manager for the project.

ICON Venue Group will serve as the club’s owner’s representative overseeing the project.

The stadium is planned to be located on Church Street and is expected to break ground this year.

The project will be funded through a 50-50 public-private partnership, with $40m funding pledged by the club and the remaining through public contributions secured to date from Orange County, City of Orlando, Seminole County and Osceola County.

"Our design team is excited to work to capture the spirit of both the city and the fan base in our design."

Cost overruns associated with the project will be covered by Orlando City SC.

The stadium’s location is adjacent to Amway Center, which is also designed by Populous, and will allow for synergy between both the facilities.

Populous design team principal and leader Bruce Miller said: "Our design team is excited to work to capture the spirit of both the city and the fan base in our design to create a stadium that will be vibrant, intimate and iconic."

Barton Malow construction team vice-president and leader David Price said the company will focus on providing innovative solutions during construction to provide a complete street-to-seat experience for the Orlando City fans.

"We will do this by using an array of advanced construction technologies to accomplish the project’s programme, budget and schedule goals," Price said.

ICON Venue will oversee the planning, design and construction for the new stadium, which will be operated by the City of Orlando.

ICON has served as project manager on eight of the eleven MLS stadiums that have been built or renovated in the past decade.
