UK’s Surrey County Cricket Club (Surrey CCC) is set to develop the international cricket stadium, Kia Oval, in a bid to meet the increasing demand for the game.

Located in Kennington, in the London Borough of Lambeth, South London, UK, the redeveloped stadium will have an expanded capacity to accommodate 40,000 guests.

The scope of the project includes the replacement of Surrey CCC’s Bedser Stand, which can offer an additional 8,000 seats, and the expansion of the existing OCS Stand.

The cricket ground currently has 25,500 seats after having already extended its permanent capacity by 3,000 over recent years.

Surrey CCC aims to complete the Kia Oval stadium expansion project in time to host the 2023 home Ashes series.

Surrey CCC chairman Richard Thompson said: “The time is now right for cricket to think on a bigger scale.

“This summer we have seen unprecedented levels of demand for cricket at the Kia Oval, whether it be for the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy, the 100th Test, which takes place in July, or to watch Surrey CCC in the NatWest T20 Blast.

"We need to build on this success and have a ground that can satisfy the unprecedented demand we have created."

The club has received planning permission for a large development next to the Pavilion, 1 Oval Square, which is also able to incorporate additional capacity and facilities.

Work on the project is expected to commence at the end of 2019 after the ICC Cricket World Cup, in which the Kia Oval stadium will host the opening game.

Once completed, the Oval will become the largest cricket ground outside India and Australia, and will be larger than London’s Lord's Cricket Ground, reported Evening Standard.
