Willmott Dixon has been chosen as the preferred bidder for the £46m project to build a combined schools and leisure campus in Ponteland, north of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK.

The project is being developed for Northumberland County Council and will see the demolition of the existing Ponteland Leisure Centre, which is to be replaced by an improved facility.

Willmott Dixon North managing director Anthony Dillon said: “We are delighted to have been awarded this contract for Northumberland County Council.

“We have developed a proposal based on the needs of the community, and are providing a range of facilities that will not only benefit the pupils from the schools but also local people for years to come.”

The new upgraded facility will feature a secondary and primary school, which once completed will be able to provide 2,040 places for pupils.

"We have developed a proposal based on the needs of the community, and are providing a range of facilities that will benefit the pupils for years to come."

The campus has been designed by FaulknerBrowns Architects, and will accommodate a new 1,600-place secondary school and sixth form to be created alongside a 420-place primary school and nursery.

An adjoining leisure campus will feature a 25m six-lane swimming pool, learner pool and children’s wet play area, as well as a fitness suite, studios and a clip and climb and soft play area.

Badminton courts, outdoor sports fields, a sports hall, two full size 3G pitches and a library are also included in the plans.

The Ponteland project will also be beneficial for the wider local community, as a combination of public and school-use facilities are scheduled to be developed for rugby, cricket, football and athletics.
