Australia’s New South Wales (NSW) Government has awarded the new $735m Sydney Football Stadium construction contract to builder John Holland.

The government’s decision to re-tender the construction stage of the project will take the total estimated cost for the project to $828m. This includes demolition, contingency and other related costs.

This marks a $99m increase on the government’s previous proposal to demolish and rebuild the stadium for $729m.

In July, the project had been thrown into chaos when the government said that developer Lendlease failed to meet the requirements regarding the stadium construction under the $729m budget and severed ties with the company.

With planning approvals in place, the Sydney Football Stadium project is expected to be concluded in time for the 2022 NRL Grand Final.

John Holland Building executive general manager David Lehmann said the team would deliver the new stadium for bigger events by leveraging its global experience on stadiums in Australia and overseas.

Lehmann said: “Our team has been involved in the delivery of major sporting developments such as the SCG MA Noble, Don Bradman and Dally Messenger stands, Wembley Stadium and the MCG Great Southern stand, and their expertise will ensure the world-class new stadium is delivered with minimal disruption.”

As part of the stadium construction contract, the company will deliver a pre-employment programme for 30 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people on the project.

It will also invest in local Aboriginal owned and managed businesses to deliver services, including construction, supply chain and support.

Acting Minister for Sports Geoff Lee said that a schedule of fixtures will be finalised for the second half of 2022 in collaboration with the NRL and its other important sporting partners.

Minister for Planning Rob Stokes said: “We are getting on with the job of delivering the best sporting and cultural facilities so that we can create the jobs and investment our state needs.”
