Southend United Football Club in the south-east of England has secured planning consent from the Southend Borough Council for its proposed new stadium at Fossetts Farm.

Designed by Populous, the Southend United 22,000-capacity stadium forms part of the wider Fossetts Farm development that will comprise 1,491 new homes, a hotel and conference hall and retail and commercial spaces.

Planned to be developed in phases, the Fossetts Farm development will also include football training facilities.

Meanwhile, the council also approved plans to redevelop the club’s current stadium, Roots Hall, to provide 502 new rental homes.

The proposed stadium will feature a façade and shell-like forms that will be incorporated into the roof, separated by blue polycarbonate strips.

The stands at the stadium will be fully covered and enclosed to provide fans with enhanced levels of comfort and enclosure.

Populous senior principal Mike Trice said: “With the council’s support of this application, we now have a clear path to the delivery of the club’s long-held ambition for a new stadium.

“We now look forward to delivering Southend United’s vision to integrate homes, business, leisure and sport together under one roof. This will prove to be a vibrant and active development and will deliver the very best new home for the fans and the club.”

The first phase of the Fossetts Farm development will include the construction of the three-sided general admission parts of the stadium, and Supporters Way, a tree-lined approach that opens into a large fan plaza.

It is planned to be delivered by 2023.

Under the second phase, principal parts of the development and overall masterplan will be completed. These include the stadium’s North Stand, indoor football domes and residential buildings.
