RATIO Architects has been chosen to lead the design process for an expanded communications building on the Carbondale campus of Southern Illinois University in the US.
The Illinois Capital Development Board has issued $8.3m for the preliminary design of this $84.7m project.
It is being financed by funds from the Rebuild Illinois capital construction project, which was approved in 2019 by the Legislature and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker.
The project will include redesigning the current 230,000ft² building and enlarging it by adding 60,000ft².
The extra space will allow for new classrooms, a flexible auditorium, laboratories, and digital post-production facilities at the university’s communication department.
In addition, it will enable media convergence due to a combined broadcast-print newsroom.
The centre will be designed to accommodate future changes and offer common areas and meeting rooms for students.
RATIO Architects, which has offices in Champaign and Chicago, has previously worked for the University of Colorado Boulder on the aerospace engineering sciences (AES) department.
The firm also partnered with the University of Georgia to design an indoor athletic facility.
In 2019, the University of Illinois at Chicago selected RATIO to lead the exterior repair and restoration of the 338ft Brutalist University Hall, which was built in 1963.
In 2011, the firm designed Eugene and Marilyn Glick Eye Institute and University School of Medicine Clinical Quad for the Indiana University School of Medicine.
Meanwhile, earlier this month, the University of Kentucky picked Studio Gang to renovate the Reynolds Building for the College of Design (CoD).
