The State Building Commission of Wisconsin US has approved rebuilding activities at the Eagle Tower project in Peninsula State Park, West Allis.

The new design will feature an 850ft-long access ramp leading to the top of a 60ft tower that supports a 1,000ft² observation deck.

In addition, the $2.07m project will feature a new trail linking the base of the ramp to a picnic and parking area, which will be repaved. Interpretive displays, benches and connections to present trails will also be built.

The Friends of Peninsula State Park have donated $750,000 to the project and are currently raising additional funds. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will take this proposal to the State Natural Resources Board for acceptance of the donation in September. Once approved, the department will proceed to start construction, which is expected in December.

State Park Wisconsin system director Ben Bergey said: “We are excited for this milestone of getting State Building Commission approval. Eagle Tower is an iconic part of Peninsula State Park and we’re all looking forward to its return.”

The DNR went through a public process to determine the final design solution for the new Eagle Tower. This process included meetings with the public, key stakeholders and legislators, as well as a public survey for the design options.
