René González Architects is set to design CasaCuba’s facility on Florida International University’s (FIU) main campus in the US.

CasaCuba, which is the emerging cultural centre and think tank of FIU, is focused on Cuban and Cuban-American history and culture.

FIU CasaCuba Board of Advisors chair Agustín Arellano said: “We are excited to begin the design phase of CasaCuba. René González Architects will be instrumental in turning our vision into reality.”

The centre of CasaCuba will enable interactive and digital experiences by integrating the latest technologies.

It will feature galleries for a range of exhibits, in addition to a venue that can be used for events, performances, and dynamic programming.

Furthermore, CasaCuba will feature the Cuban Research Institute (CRI) and will promote engaging discussions for policymakers and business leaders from across the world.

The John S and James L Knight Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities provided financing to CasaCuba for the facility design.

FIU selected René González Architects based on the company’s qualifications and experience, as well as its understanding of the mission and project requirements.

González said in a statement: “The opportunity to be the Architect for CasaCuba represents the culmination of a goal begun nearly 30 years ago at FIU, when I researched, taught, and wrote on Cuban architecture.”

Previously, the company worked on various projects, including the North Beach Oceanfront Center, the Berkowitz Contemporary Foundation and a masterplan for the Wolfsonian-FIU.
