The design proposed by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners (RSHP) in collaboration with China Northeast Architectural Design & Research Institute (CNADRI), AECOM and Railway 2, has been selected for terminal 4 at Bao’an International Airport (SZX) in Shenzhen, China.

The design envisages a 400,000m² terminal building with 60 new stands and connections to the mid-field satellite.

This terminal will provide connections to existing and new transport infrastructure and will be able to meet 31 million passengers a year, of which 24 million will be international passengers.

At the heart of the concept is a 10,000m central garden space, which will be connected to other parts of the airport through landscaped pedestrian routes.

To meet sustainable design objectives, the building is designed to use natural light at a maximum level while controlling solar gain.

Furthermore, the design also includes extensive vegetation, displacement ventilation and low water consumption.

RSHP Asia managing director Ben Warner said: “Winning the T4 competition with CNADRI, AECOM and Railway 4 is an important and substantial milestone in our work in China. Coinciding with the tenth anniversary of the founding of RSHP in Shanghai, it is a testament to the successful and collaborative teamwork we enjoy with our partners here.

“Our design for the new terminal supports Shenzhen’s goal for being a centre for new technologies as well as its aspirations to be the world’s greenest city.”

Besides Bao’an International Airport, RSHP is currently working on designs of Terminal 3 at Taoyuan Airport (TPE) in Taiwan and the east wing at Geneva Airport (GVA) in Switzerland.
