The San Jose Light Tower Corporation (SJLTC) in the US has announced three finalists for its worldwide open ideas competition for the Arena Green space at Guadalupe River Park and Gardens.

The finalists were selected by the Urban Confluence Silicon Valley Jury of 14, comprising local, national, and international experts. They looked for a transformative design with a good physical presence and a net-zero energy approach.

A total of 963 submissions were received for the Urban Confluence Silicon Valley competition, which was launched in July last year.

Breeze of Innovation, the first finalist, uses a conical void that will allow people to enjoy the vertical space while using the different floors of the 200ft tower.

Named Nebula Tower, the second finalist envisions a light, precisely formed tower, inspired by a nebular cloud with a vacuum inside. The lattice grid and nebulous figure of the tower offers changing images in different perspectives during the daytime.

During the night, superimposed light transforms the landmark and delivers visual forms within the tower’s grid.

Urban Confluence Silicon Valley Board chair Jon Ball said: “We are beyond excited to reveal these amazing finalists.

“It is incredible to think one of these designs will brand Silicon Valley and become the world’s next iconic landmark, creating an international attraction and inspiring future generations.”

The three finalists will receive stipend for assistance as they meet with local government leaders, technical advisors, and the San Jose Light Tower Corporation board to further refine their proposed designs.

The Jury will select the winning design next year and present it to the San Jose City Council for approval, following which construction is expected to start in 2022.
